For centuries, the different-speaking inhabitants of the Gorizia region have lived in harmony, in the same state formations and in lively daily contact. The area was a dynamic meeting point of different traditions, with folk traditions intersecting above all where Slovenian and Friulian farmers met. Chapter two presents the numerous mythical creatures and beliefs known from the narrative tradition and carnivals in the wider Gorizia area. Both the carnival and the narrative traditions serve as cultural generators that can preserve the identity of the region through active participation and the safeguarding of traditions. Tradition is not the preservation of ashes, but the passing on of a fire that seeks new possibilities in changing circumstances.
