Language and culture, embedded in a particular time, place and society, are locally bound phenomena. This local builds the regional and the national, which in turn feeds into the global. The linguistic and cultural image of Gorizia today is the result of centuries of coexistence between Slavic, specifically Slovene, and Romance, first Friulian and then Italian linguistic and cultural elements. This unique Central European cultural and historical region has been shaped throughout history by Germanic and Jewish components, in addition to Romance and Slavic ones. The first chapter describes the genesis of the linguistic reality of the Gorizia Region and the intertwining and interchanging of its components in chronological order, by chapters, symbolically titled with place names in different local languages.
